Bordeaux Mission

"Then how do you explain how the missionaries in Latin America are bringing so many more people to the truth than we are?"

"Get real, Beaverton! We're selling the idea that wine is a sin in Bordeaux, France! You know how it goes! You get to the discussion about the Word of Wisdom and how it's a sin to have a verre de rouge with dinner, and they look at you like you're from another planet! It takes a heroic effort to find anyone at all who is ready to hear that message!"

"You may be right."

"He doesn't remember what it's like! He doesn't even remember his own mission except in little nuggets of faith-promoting stories to tell in talks like that one! And for that oh-so-inspiring message, he got a free trip to Europe! Then he had a lovely dinner with the Mission President and his family while we went home to a dinner of warmed-over rice. We're the ones who are out here pounding the pavement every day, busting our balls for the Lord. He doesn't know jack about how faithful we are."

"Elder Hobbs, that's not a very appropriate thing to say, especially about the Lord's anointed!"

"He may be the 'Lord's anointed' but I still say he doesn't know jack."

"And why, pray tell, would the Lord anoint someone who 'doesn't know jack,' as you so quaintly put it?"

"Even if the church is perfect, the people aren't."

"And that includes you, Elder Hobbs."

EXMORMON

"Hey, I never said I was perfect. I'm just saying that I'm not going to kiss that guy's butt and thank him for telling me I'm doing a crappy job when I know I'm not."

After our nightly prayers, as we were getting in bed, of course I started thinking that Elder Beaverton was right. I shouldn't have been breaking the rules. I shouldn't have been allowing myself to have impure thoughts. That was why I hadn't been feeling the spirit lately, and really hadn't felt it in a long time.

As far as being inspired to find people to teach, however, it didn't really matter anymore. My last work day was over. Now I just had Thursday to pack and to go around and say goodbye to some favorite local members, then Friday to have my temple recommend interview, and Saturday I'd be on the plane.
