Orem High
I managed to avoid Joe at lunch, but I couldn't avoid him in math class. Taking my seat, I said hi to him as best I could and then looked away. He seemed to understand that this was hard for me, and he seemed to feel bad because of it. I couldn't really be mad at him, though, because I knew that I would have done exactly the same thing if I'd been in his shoes.
"Andrea says you've hooked up with Tanya," he said quietly.
"Yeah, lucky me. So I suppose Andrea's living with you now," I said without looking at him.
"No, that really wouldn't work in the long term, living in that little room in that house with all those guys. My lease only allows one person."
"So she went back to her family?" I asked.
"Yeah," he said. "There's still a little friction there, but when her dad saw that she was willing to walk out rather than put up with more of his shit, it made him understand that he was going to have to make an effort to give her a little more space and privacy."
"Well that's a good thing for her anyway," I said "since he was definitely trying to control her life too much."
