Young Women's

A bunch of other kids from the ward arrived as well, and Brandon Carlson, whose project it was, started organizing people. I was thrilled to see that Alexandra had brought Melissa, and since it turned out that there wasn't that much work for us to do, the three of us sat off to the side near the window to hang out. We could see that Amy and Lynn were among the boys supposedly helping them, but obviously more interested in carrying on an animated conversation with Rodney and Jonathan Grant.

"They work fast for little kids, don't they?" asked Melissa, looking over at Amy and Lynn.

"That Lynn!" I said, rolling my eyes.

After a while, Andrew got bored of his task and came over to sit by us.

"Hi April," he said. "I don't think you've introduced me to your friend."

"Andrew, this is Melissa," I said. "Melissa, Andrew."

"Actually, she's my friend," said Alexandra.

"Nice to meet you," said Andrew.

"Likewise," replied Melissa, absently. Then looking out the window at Marc's BMW she said "That's a pretty sweet car, huh? Are your parents going to give you one like that when you turn sixteen?"

Andrew laughed. "I don't know. I guess that would be pretty cool, wouldn't it?"

"My mom says she's dreading the day I learn to drive," I said. "She's afraid something bad will happen."

"She'll change her tune next year when you start attending early-morning seminary," said Andrew. "Once she gets a taste of getting up at five every morning to warm up the car in the dead of Winter, she'll be begging to give you the keys. I know my mom was pretty happy when Isabel learned to drive."

I smiled in response.

"Andrew, you're not done here!" called Brandon.

"Oops, duty calls," said Andrew. "It was nice meeting you," he said to Melissa, and he got back to work.

Melissa watched him as he left, sizing him up as if he were a piece of meat. "He seems pretty nice," she said. "I can see why you like him."

I gave a sigh of exasperation. "I didn't say I like him."

"Yeah, sure," said Alexandra.

"What about you?" I asked Alexandra. "You haven't told us who you like."
