Youth Conference

Great, he just asked me to dance in order to kill time until his fabulous dance with Lara. I wanted to go crawl under a rock, but I consoled myself with the fact that this dance meant that at the end of the night at least I wouldn't have to tell the other girls that I hadn't been asked to dance at all.

When the song ended, I went and found Amy to ask her how her dance went.

"Great," she said, "his name is Greg, and he seems to like me. He said that his friend who was dancing with you is in love with Lara, though."

"Yeah, I noticed," I said.

"Oh, well, there are plenty of other guys here."

Greg then walked up to Amy with two cups of punch and handed her one. I could see Tom bringing me one, too, but since he was undoubtedly just doing it out of politeness since his friend was interested in Amy, I wasn't too impressed by the gesture. I accepted the punch gracefully, but at my earliest opportunity I slipped away saying I had to check my hair in the bathroom. Tom was gazing across at Lara and didn't try to stop me.

April was in the bathroom with Alexandra and Cookie, all three of them discussing some guy from Ely that Alexandra had met and danced with. I gave my hair a quick once-over and then asked the other girls to tell Amy that I was tired and had decided to leave early.

"I'd tell her myself, but she's with some guy she she seems to like, and I'm avoiding the guy's friend," I said.

"Ah, she ran off and stuck you with the ugly one, huh? Poor abandoned Lynn!" said Cookie.

"Something like that."

"Don't worry, you'll find someone tomorrow," April said encouragingly.

EXMORMON

"Whatever. In the meantime, just tell Amy I'm turning in. See you tomorrow."

"See you," they all replied.

On my way back out, I peeked into the dance hall one last time. There was Y off in a corner talking to Z as usual, not even dancing with any girls.

Someday, I thought to myself walking back to my dorm room. Maybe tomorrow night... It wasn't as if he was with someone else, so why not me? I tried to convince myself that maybe it wasn't that he didn't like me -- maybe he was just shy. But I could see that this was just wishful thinking since I often started up conversations with him, and his response was always to escape as quickly as possible. Yet he would converse willingly enough with Claire or Kimberly when they found time for him. There were no two ways about it really, he just wasn't interested.

I got back to my room and immediately got out my photo of Y. The photo was a present from April since she suspected that I liked him. Even though April and I had always been close, I insisted to her that I most certainly had no interest in him. I was mortified at the thought that April would tell Andrew who would tell Y himself, and I would be ridiculed. Already I had been worried by what she might have had to say to have gotten a hold of that picture, but it turned out that it was nothing suspicious. Andrew had merely given her a discarded family portrait one time, and April had cut out Andrew for herself and David for me and then had discreetly thrown away the rest of the family. So I accepted the photo while assuring her vehemently that I had no need of a photo of this person, and then I promptly hid it away for private contemplation.

Alone in my dorm room I gazed at the photo. I started to go through my usual fantasy of somehow supernaturally giving him a dream in which he finally sees how beautiful I am. In the dream, my hair is gorgeous and my dress is perfect (I had mentally designed three fantastic red dresses just for this dream), and he can't help but want to ask me to dance. The song playing in the background of the dream is Lady in Red.
