Youth Conference

I got back to my picture of Y and was about to maybe start writing in my journal when Amy finally arrived.

"So how'd it go?" I asked her as soon as she was inside with the door closed. "Are you in love?"

"Not like with Z," she replied, "but I'm starting to like him. After you left, there were only three more songs, so you hardly needed to leave early. Tom would have left you soon enough to claim his dance with Lara."

"I know," I said. "It's a tiny little gesture, but I kind of wanted to reject him first. So tell me about Greg."

"You were wise -- I didn't get off so easily. Shortly after you left, Lara stopped by to encourage Tom with a few words before rejoining her other admirers, and when the last dance was announced, Tom immediately rushed to her side. She remembered her obligation to dance with him, and as a treat to Greg, she convinced Kimberly to ask him to dance the last dance with her. From what Greg was telling me, he and Tom go to the same high school as Kimberly and Lara, and Kimberly and Lara are two of the most popular girls in the school, so of course he couldn't pass up his opportunity to dance with Kimberly. I was left with the fun of being a wallflower for the last dance of the night."

"So they're both non-members?" I asked.

"Yeah, but they've met with the missionaries and they're taking the discussions. Apparently Greg is a little leery about the whole thing since he's an atheist, but he says that Tom has been terribly enthusiastic about it. He's told Greg that he's starting to feel the truth of the message, but it seems suspiciously linked to the fact that Lara gives him the time of day exactly when he's talking about how interested he is in the church."

"Well, she's clearly taking her 'every member a missionary' calling to heart. But if Greg's not interested, why did he even come to this conference?"

"He said that Tom convinced him that it would be fun. He says that he's having fun so far. And he seems to like me -- or at least he did until he wandered off with Kimberly."

"He'll be back as soon as she starts ignoring him again. She's not going to waste too much of her missionary zeal on a guy who's clearly never going to join the church."

"True, but I should probably stick to good Mormon boys myself."

"Yeah, but a non-member is better than nothing, which is what we have now."

"We'll see," she said, "maybe our little present will have the desired effect."

"Hope springs eternal," I replied. "Let's get some sleep."

As soon as I got into bed, my thoughts turned to Y again. This time I imagined us together at the end of a dark corridor like that couple we saw at the dance. I imagined him touching me, and I pictured him doing a little more than maybe we were supposed to do. They say that boys are even more preoccupied with dirty thoughts than girls, and I wondered if he had imagined such things and if he could possibly be tempted. Of course it was a sin to even fantasize about sinning, but despite all of my prayers for help, I couldn't stop these sorts of thoughts from coming to me. So for this time I silently gave in to them. Once this business was finished, I drifted off to sleep.
